Canadian trumpeter Norman Engel enjoys a richly diversified career, performing on modern and historical trumpets. He is one of a new generation of players who feels at home in all genres of music. Mr. Engel performs extensively as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player.
He has had the pleasure of working with the Toronto Symphony, Canadian Opera Company, Santa Fe Opera, National Ballet of Canada, Esprit Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic, Windsor Symphony, Symphony Nova Scotia, Hannaford Street Silver Band, and the Stratford Festival among many others.
Norman has also worked for many years in Toronto’s theatre community, having performed thousands of shows in the orchestras of Miss Saigon, Phantom, Beauty and the Beast, Ragtime, Cinderella, West Side Story, Nicholas Nickleby, Lord of the Rings, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Wizard of Oz, Les Miserables, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Alice Through the Looking Glass, The King and I and Anne of Green Gables.
Mr. Engel’s career as one of North America’s leading performers on natural trumpet has taken him across Europe, to Asia, New Zealand and throughout most of Canada and the United States. He has performed with Canada’s renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra since 1993. He has also toured, recorded and concertized with American Bach Soloists, Opera Atelier, Apollo’s Fire (Cleveland), New York Collegium, Boston Early Music, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Indianapolis Baroque, Portland Baroque, Le Boreades de Montreal, Aradia Ensemble, and Arion.
As a recording artist, Norman has performed on more than 75 CDs and DVDs for Sony Classical, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Naxos, CBC, Analekta, Atma, Koch Classics, Tafelmusik Media and Opening Day records. He has performed on countless radio and television broadcasts both live, streamed and in studio.
Mr. Engel has given masterclasses for the University of Toronto, Sir Wilfred Laurier University, Glenn Gould School RCMT, Grand Valley State University, Tafelmusik Summer Institute, and the Toronto Trumpet Symposium.
